Korero o te Tumuaki o Whenua Hoko Holdings,“building for our future”
Ma te huruhuru ka rere te manu - Achievement does not result from its own accord – it requires resource and application
Tēnā koe e te whanau o Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara. Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou. He Tumuaki o Ngā Maunga Whakahii o Kaipara Whenua Hoko Holdings Ltd ahau.
Over the past 2 years, Ngā Maunga Whakahii o Kaipara’s commercial property company, Whenua Hoko Holdings Ltd (‘Whenua Hoko’), has been building strongly, both literally on the ground and metaphorically in the office. As Tumuaki of Whenua Hoko, I’d like to share some of this mahi and who we are with you.
The whakatauki above reflects the mahi we do, and our approach to business. The currency of the commercial world is information and judgment, and it is critical that we ensure decisions are informed and well grounded. This is particularly so given the responsibility we have to maintain and grow the asset base of Ngā Maunga Whakahii o Kaipara, and because we live in a world of misinformation and a multitude of investment options and pitfalls.
I joined Whenua Hoko as Tumuaki (Chief Executive) in 2016, and have been busy building the business from strategy and execution to building the company’s internal resources. Almost 3 years into our investment strategy, I am confident that the property industry will continue to provide a sustainable investment area for the Ngā Maunga Whakahii o Kaipara Development Trust.
Whenua Hoko is involved in the property market, and is part of the commercial investment arm of Ngā Maunga Whakahii. Its business is focused on property acquisition and development, in the rōhe of Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara in Auckland’s North-West. Our office is located in Westgate, which we share with some of the Development Trust staff which helps with the business’ financial management and operations.
The company’s Directors are Grant Hope (Chair), Rhys Freeman, Rob Hutchinson and Chris Caldwell, who collectively bring significant commercial and property expertise to the business. Former Chair, Anita Mazzoleni left the Board earlier this year. I would like to publicly thank and congratulate Anita for her mahi since the settlement in 2013, and on the success she achieved during her tenure.
Whenua Hoko works with its partners to identify opportunities for prudent investment in the local property market. These include Crown agencies (eg MBIE, HLC, NZ Defense Force) and major land developers (eg Fletcher Residential Ltd). We continue to build our internal expertise, resources and infrastructure to increase our ability to deliver strong commercial results and ensure the business remains sustainable and successful. We are working with the wider Ngā Maunga Whakahii group to ensure decisions are informed by relevant non-commercial factors and wider objectives and values of the Group.
Over the past two years or so, Whenua Hoko’s main investment has been in the Hobsonville Point development through our subsidiary Te Uru Ltd. This investment has been a success to date, increasing our revenues/asset base and more importantly our experience and reputation in land development. Some key successes for 2018 are;
· completing the development of two serviced superlots where 130+ homes are now being built;
· completing our first sale at Hobsonville Point. This was a major milestone and an achievement we can all be proud of.
Dane Grey is the Property Development Manager working on the Te Uru development. Dane has done a great job managing the development, settlements and strategy for future.
Whenua Hoko has the potential to grow successfully and sustainably for many decades to come. The rights to surplus Crown land, strategic partnerships and location in the main growth area for Auckland, provide Whenua Hoko with the opportunity to be a major player in the property market.
Ngā mihi e te whanau. Daniel Clay, Tumuaki, Ngā Maunga Whakahii o Kaipara Whenua Hoko Holdings Ltd
